The last thoroughbred V12 under the regulatory radar

At WOT, we've always had a soft spot for turbocharged combustion engines, and the new Aston Martin Vanquish 2024, with its 835 hp twin-turbo V12, is no exception. In a world where hybridisation and electrification are taking over, to see a manufacturer dare to maintain a V12 without electric assistance is a real feat. However, Aston Martin is playing the rarity card, with only 1000 examples of this new Vanquish, confirming that this legendary engine is on the verge of extinction.

The heart of the beast: A high-performance V12 bi-turbo engine

Under the bonnet of this Vanquish is a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12, delivering 835 hp and an impressive 1000 Nm of torque. Featuring a number of technical improvements, this engine boasts a specific power output of 160 hp/litre. Aston Martin has strengthened the cylinder block and connecting rods, redesigned the cylinder heads and optimised the intake and exhaust systems to push the turbochargers 15% faster than the previous generation. The injectors, meanwhile, benefit from a 10% higher flow rate, guaranteeing better fuel delivery.

At WOT, this is exactly what we like: an engine with exceptional performance, capable of pushing the limits while complying with standards, without compromising on driving pleasure. This kind of endangered engine deserves to be celebrated, and the Vanquish is a magnificent ambassador for it.

Transmission and chassis: The quest for perfection

To make the most of this V12, Aston Martin has combined an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission with an electronic limited slip differential (e-diff). This system, integrated with ESP, ensures greater agility in tight bends and optimum control at high speeds. With a final gear ratio optimised for top speed, this Vanquish is capable of a top speed of 345 km/h.

But the real feat lies in the completely redesigned chassis. Based on an aluminium structure, the car gains in lateral rigidity, improving stability and offering a more engaging drive. The suspension system, shared with the DB12 and Vantage models, is designed to offer the perfect balance between long-distance comfort and on-demand sportiness.

Tailored driving, a sporty DNA

As usual, Aston Martin offers several driving modes (GT, Sport and Sport+), allowing the engine response and chassis configuration to be adapted to the driver's preferences. This attention to detail means that the car is as enjoyable on the motorway as it is on the racetrack.

The addition of larger anti-roll bars, combined with recalibrated power steering, ensures greater precision and immediate response, making the Vanquish as agile as it is powerful. At WOT, this is what we expect from a car of this calibre: a fluid yet incisive driving experience, without compromise.

WOT verdict

The new Aston Martin Vanquish 2024 is the very embodiment of resistance to current trends. This twin-turbo V12 engine is probably one of the last of its kind, and Aston Martin has paid tribute to it by placing it at the heart of a car with breathtaking performance. Although the decision not to make a limited numbered series is questionable, unless the rarity of this model at 1000 units is enough to arouse interest.
