EA888.4 DNF

For more than a decade, the TSI 2.0 gasoline engine has undeniably been the best-selling engine within the Volkswagen AG group.

Up to 333 hp.

With each new release, it systematically integrates the latest technologies and, in terms of performance, it always manages to come among the best in its class. This latest version of the engine is no exception to the rule. Available for GTI and R models as well as under other names in the range, this engine is available in a very wide range of engines from 245 to 333 hp.

The 4th generation of the 2.0 T(F)SI engine was launched with the arrival of the Golf VIII GTI in early 2020.

Due to the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the production and delivery of the first vehicles fitted with this engine were delayed. It was not until the last quarter of 2021 that the Golf VIII was finally delivered in large numbers worldwide.

Before starting the development of the 2.0 TSI EA888.4 engine (fourth generation), it is necessary to access the engine control unit data. For the second consecutive generation, Continental has been chosen as the supplier to exploit this new engine.

Even if we were familiar with the previous generation’s Simos 18 engine management, this new generation ECU, known as the Simos 19, brings its share of new specifications and security devices.

In addition, in accordance with the new European standard, this ECU works in tandem with a secure gateway (SGW) that filters communications. All these security measures have made access to ECU data more difficult.

It was not until October 2022 that the AutoTuner engine reprogramming tool found a solution allowing thousands of users to implement this protocol and start their own development projects. And what development!

It was an exceptional opportunity for WOT to launch a complete development project, involving a new engine, a new vehicle and a new ECU.

Development.

This opportunity allowed us to showcase our expertise by taking the flagship of the Wolfsburg brand by storm, proposing a range of powers from 380 to 470 horsepower, a first for this new VAG engine.

Building on our solid experience in the development of performance components, we designed a hybrid turbo based on the excellent Continental turbo. Blessed with responsiveness from the lowest engine speeds, it was essential to preserve this characteristic while improving performance to restore the EA888.4 to all its grandeur.

Most vehicles equipped with this engine also feature a latest generation haldex transmission and DSG automatic transmission. It was essential to make these three elements work synergistically, as the manufacturer would have done had it taken up this challenge. The intercooler also played a crucial role in the stability of the results. In the latest WOT-3 evolution, our development vehicle is equipped with KW V3 suspension, high-performance brakes and lightweight OZ rims.

Standing starts are simply surrealistic for a vehicle of this category, and pick-up is simply breathtaking. In WOT-3 version, it’s an authentic sleeper!

The development process

We select the vehicle which combines the most significant criteria contributing to pollution, in particular: consumption, weight, air resistance (drag coefficient) and type of transmission. For this EA888.4 DNF engine, we opted for the Audi S3 2.0 TSI model. If the vehicle successfully passes the numerous pollution tests, the official verification body can logically conclude that the other, less polluting models in the range will also obtain positive results. This is why, within WOT, such importance is given to the engine code.

What about the warranty?

At WOT, we invest heavily in research and development to provide you with an experience where performance and reliability go hand in hand. However, it is possible that during a routine inspection, the manufacturer has detected that your vehicle has undergone modifications. Even if the improvements made by WOT are homologated, this detection can lead to the loss of the factory warranty.

For this reason we have created an additional motor warranty, specifically designed to meet your highest demands.
