BMW has finally unveiled its new M5 (G90), ushering in an era of electrified performance for this iconic sports saloon.
The new M5 is powered by one other then the XM's 4.4 twin-turbo S68 V8 engine. The 197 bhp, 280 Nm electric motor is integrated into ZF's Steptronic eight-speed automatic gearbox. This plug-in hybrid system enables the M5 to run in all-electric mode for 67 to 69 km, with a top speed of 140 km/h, thanks to an 18.6 kWh battery. This translates into CO2 emissions of just 37 to 39 g/km, which means that the car is exempt from the environmental penalty in most countries.
The combination of combustion engine and electric motor brings total power to 727 bhp and torque to 1,000 Nm. Although V8 power alone is 585 bhp, 40 bhp less than the previous M5 Competition, torque remains at 750 Nm. We're confident that we'll be able to offer WOT-approved reprogramming for this engine later this year. The weight of the car, which has increased due to hybridisation, is now over 2.5 tonnes, which could raise concerns about its agility. However, the M5 G90 makes up for the extra weight with 0-100kph acceleration in just 3.5 seconds, and an optional top speed of 305kph (250kph standard).
The M5 is equipped with M xDrive all-wheel drive in three modes, including 2WD for pure rear-wheel drive and 4WD Sport for rear-wheel drive. Rear-wheel steering, with a steering angle of up to 1.5 degrees, enhances agility and cornering efficiency. The active rear differential optimises torque distribution, contributing to exemplary manoeuvrability and helping to make weight a thing of the past.
The new M5's suspension features a five-link aluminium rear axle with adjustable damping, tuned for optimum performance on circuits such as the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Carbon-ceramic brakes remain optional, but the standard braking system is already very powerful, with six-piston callipers and 410mm discs at the front.
Production of the new M5 is set to begin in July 2024, with a commercial launch scheduled for November. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid status, the M5 avoids the ecological tax penalty, offering a considerable advantage over competitors such as the heavily taxed Audi RS6 and RS7. The starting price of the M5 is set at €159,000, which, despite an increase on the previous model, remains competitive given the tax savings.
The new BMW M5 (G90) is a perfect fusion of tradition and innovation, offering impressive performance thanks to its plug-in hybrid while complying with current environmental standards. It's a combination we at WOT are particularly fond of, as it combines power, efficiency and, above all, enormous reprogramming potential. BMW is redefining the standards of the sports saloon to the delight of driving enthusiasts and performance lovers alike.
