The new 2024 Cupra Formentor

One of the most popular car brands is revisiting one of the most emblematic models in its catalogue, four years after its launch, which marked the emancipation of its parent company, Seat. Although the Formentor shared many elements with the Seat Leon, such as the front lights and dashboard, these similarities in no way hindered its commercial success. With more than 120,000 units sold in Europe last year, up 23% on 2022, the Formentor continues to appeal.

The restyled Formentor abandons the famous 390 bhp 5-cylinder engine of the VZ5 variant, and concentrates instead on a 333 bhp 4-cylinder at the top of its range, complemented by a 265 bhp version also labelled VZ. At the same time, two new plug-in hybrid variants have been introduced, offering 204 bhp and 272 bhp respectively thanks to a 1.5-litre TSI engine combined with a 19.7 kWh battery, guaranteeing over 100 km in 100% electric mode. In the entry-level range, the catalogue offers a 150 bhp version, available with a new lightweight 48 V hybrid or with a diesel engine, providing a wide range of choices to meet all expectations.

Performance and handling

The famous EA888 2-litre turbo engine now produces 333bhp in the VZ3 version, an increase of 23bhp on the previous version, while torque remains unchanged at 420Nm. Engine management and transmission adjustments have been made to improve acceleration, although this does not translate into a significant increase in straight-line speed. Despite this, the Formentor feels as quick as its 0-100kph time of 4.9 seconds suggests, although it still lacks the dynamism and distinctive sound one might hope for. Power is sent to all four wheels via the same seven-speed DSG gearbox, accompanied by a new torque-splitting rear differential.

The real highlight of this version is the introduction of the Volkswagen Group's new rear-axle torque split, borrowed from models such as the Golf R Mk8.5, Audi RS3 and Leon Estate. Using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to send power to the outside rear wheel under load, the Formentor is now more dynamic than before in sporty driving, allowing predictable rotation and a more neutral balance in a variety of situations.

The brakes have been upgraded for 2024, with the VZ3 receiving larger 375mm discs and six-piston callipers at the front, and 310mm discs at the rear. Despite its relatively high kerb weight of 1566kg, the brakes inspire confidence with strong initial attack and resistance to fade.

WOT-approved reprogramming already available

For enthusiasts looking to maximise the performance of their Formentor, WOT allows the full potential of this 4th generation EA888 engine to be exploited. Through precise engine mapping adjustments, WOT can increase power and torque to 380hp and 480Nm while improving throttle response and overall vehicle efficiency. These modifications are designed to deliver a more dynamic and responsive driving experience, meeting the expectations of the most demanding drivers.
