It’s a rumor sending shivers down the spines of enthusiasts around the world and at WOT, we’re anything but indifferent. Camouflaged prototypes have been spotted in Germany, hinting that Volkswagen might be preparing something extraordinary for the future of the Golf 8.5: the arrival of the legendary 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder engine from the Audi RS3. What has long been considered an engineering fantasy might soon become reality and if it does, it would be fantastic news for performance car lovers.
The 2.5 TFSI is more than just an engine, it's a cult object, jealously guarded by Audi for decades. Until now, the only notable exception outside of the four-ring brand was the Cupra Formentor VZ5, which received a slightly detuned version with 390 horsepower. So, this rumor of a five-cylinder Golf R reportedly planned to mark the 25th anniversary of the R sub-brand in 2027,doesn’t come out of nowhere.
According to circulating information, this Golf R would be the most powerful in the model's history, boasting over 400 horsepower, with a weight increase of just 25 kg compared to the current 2.0-liter engine. To handle the added power, upgraded brakes and a torque-vectoring rear differential both already featured in the RS3 would be part of the package.
Beyond the raw numbers, what excites us most at WOT is the promise of perfect synergy. We’re convinced the Golf R’s chassis is inherently better suited to this engine than that of the RS3 8Y. The balance, responsiveness, and handling of the Golf could elevate the unique character of the five-cylinder engine even further.
Our only hope is that the gearbox tuning won’t be a simple copy-paste from the RS3. In our view, it’s what makes that car much less enjoyable to drive. A custom gearbox remap would be essential to fully unlock the potential of this engine in this chassis.
If this project comes to life, it would be a strong signal from Volkswagen proving that the internal combustion engine still has a bright future ahead. Just when it seemed like ICE’s days on this platform were numbered, the arrival of such an engine would be a breath of fresh air.
To us, this car has everything it takes to become a new performance gem. And beyond that, it's an ideal candidate for our certified ECU tuning service.
This potential future model is a perfect illustration of our mission at WOT: to give exceptional engines a second life through remapping that meets environmental standards. When the time comes, we’d be thrilled to offer this future Golf R the chance to deliver optimal performance while remaining 100% compliant. Because in our view, an engine like this still has a rightful place on the road of tomorrow.
